As one of the first conservatories in the U.S. to acknowledge the prime importance of jazz as an art form, Manhattan School of Music’s programs of study for jazz arts majors are designed to develop skilled performers, 作曲家, 摆放的, 而且 jazz educators in preparation for careers in jazz music.
Systematic 而且 rigorous conservatory training, combined with a myriad of performance 而且 networking opportunities in New York City, make this program one of the richest of its kind for young jazz musicians.
Every concert season, guest soloists are featured in concert with our large ensembles, providing enriched performance experiences for students. Recent guest soloists include Paquito D’Rivera, NEA 爵士乐 Masters C而且ido 而且 Dave Liebman, 兰迪Brecker就, Jon Faddis, 乔Lovano, 鲍勃·明茨, 而且 vocalists 简Monheit, Roberta Gambarini, 以及朱迪·西尔瓦诺.

All students in the 爵士乐艺术 学位 programs are required to fulfill their ensemble requirement as outlined in their course sequence plans 而且 as assigned by the associate dean of the 爵士乐艺术 Program.

爵士乐 composition is offered for graduate applicants who wish to pursue a 音乐硕士 学位. Students who major in jazz composition at Manhattan School of Music are presented with several unique 而且 special opportunities to develop their art. These include regularly scheduled 作曲家’ reading sessions each semester for large 而且 small ensembles; two 爵士乐 Philharmonic reading sessions with full studio orchestra (symphony orchestra & jazz big b而且; sessions are recorded for faculty review 而且 study); student commissions with performance 而且 monetary awards, performance of compositions at 爵士乐 at Lincoln Center concerts, quarterly jazz 作曲家’ concerts for chamber 而且 jazz orchestra ensembles; 而且 open access to two computer-based electronic music studios.
Classes are offered in studio synthesis techniques, composing 而且 arranging for MIDI synthesizer, arranging for jazz 作曲家, advanced studio recording, film scoring classes, songwriting classes.
爵士乐 Voice (Masters Degree)
爵士乐 voice is offered for graduate applicants who wish to pursue a 音乐硕士 学位. The jazz voice program at Manhattan School of Music is designed to prepare each vocalist to be an exceptional performer who is able to function in today’s business of music. The program is spearheaded by our internationally reknown faculty 西奥Bleckmann 而且 Kate McGarry. Here are some of the highlights of the program:

The program of study leading to the Manhattan School of Music doctor of musical arts 学位 is offered with a major in 爵士乐艺术 Advancement.
Program Philosophy
As jazz music 继续s to work its way into the mainstream of the American education system, new 而且 innovative methods need to be formulated to assure the perpetuation 而且 development of this important art form. The Manhattan School of Music philosophy is that this is best done at the actual point where knowledge is transferred, at the level of the educator.
Having created a program that attracts top musical talent, Manhattan School of Music trains Doctor of Musical Arts c而且idates through an integrated 而且 innovative educational format that focuses on three distinct 而且 critical areas of jazz music: performance, composition 而且 pedagogy. This three-fold educational concept enables a student to develop as “The Complete Artist Musician” — one who excels equally as a performer, 作曲家, 编曲, 老师, conductor of workshops 而且 clinics, 和讲师. This distinctive concept in music education is the central philosophy of the Manhattan School of Music Doctoral 爵士乐艺术 Advancement Program.
